Tamandua is a Swedish rigger based in Berlin, Germany. He has been working with rope professionally, primarily through teaching and offering intimate sessions to clients, since 2016. Although a rope top most of the time, he has a wide range of experience as a rope bottom as well, and highly values ability to relate to both perspectives. He is a queer person, who appreciates tying with people of various gender.

‘I am passionate about the semenawa aspects of kinbaku, to enjoy the heightened state when going through the process of struggle and suffering. I love the flow state of power exchange, when allowing and being allowed to control the other manages to feel effortless. And then there is the attraction to the wonderful aesthetic realm of kinbaku.

I view kinbaku as a thing of continuous exploration – where new doors open as you go deeper and further with a partner, over the course of a session or over the course of a long partnership. Sometimes though, the magic that defines kinbaku can be just that one alluring image that sticks with you, a moment suspended in time.

I wish for the core of my kinbaku to lay in the meeting of the aesthetic expression and the empathetic intention of the practice, while maintaining it’s erotic power as the foundation. And believe that the more ones tying develops, the more seamlessly the parts can intermingle’’

Technical focus class: Stemless takate kote

Takate kote, sometimes called gote shibari, box-tie, or most often as the abbreviation TK, is a popular category of upper body harness iconic to classical styles of kinbaku.

In this workshop Tamandua will teach his commonly used pattern of a stemless variety of takate kote, based on the idea that it functions as an element in suspension, as well as on its own.

Contents will include technical explanations of the ties different parts. How they function, especially under load, and how to manage tension and positioning for ideal results.

Anatomical principles, how one's body is effected by being in a TK, is an important topic when learning this tie. Because, although TK it is one of the most beloved types of harness, it does have a high risk profile, commonly being a culprit behind incidents of nerve damage and shoulder pain.

During the class we will go through some of the most common causes for issues and methods of resolving them.

Planned schedule for the evening:

  • Investigation in anatomy for TK and overview of general safety

  • Stemless TK - basic pattern

  • Demo of structure under suspension load (semi suspension)

  • Third rope variation for added support and aesthetics

  • TK with hojo cuffs instead of lower wraps as an alternative.

Requirements:

  • The person being tied needs to be able to get their hands behind their back (either crossed or side by side) [updated 17.10.]

  • To ensure you are able to participate in the exercises please make sure to sign up with a partner.

  • If you wish to attend as a single person you may do so as an observer. Please state this in your application.

  • All attendees need to have prior experience with shibari/kinbaku, models/bottoms as well.

  • Riggers/tops should be able to master basics such as single column tie/basic knot by heart, and have prior experience in learning harnesses of some kind.
Please practice a lot before the event if you feel uncertain!

  • To participate the part of exercises where we load the TK you must have learned how to make suspension lines by an instructor prior to the event.
If not sufficient in this knowledge, you will focus on practicing the ties without suspension lines during the class.

Bring:

  • 5 ropes of regular length (ca 8 meters)

  • Safety shears

  • It is highly recommended that the ropes are jute sold specifically for shibari, and not ropes from a hardware store or sex shop.

You will receive help to cut ropes into suitable length for your partner during the class if you so wish.

Semenawa without TK

Saturday 4.11. & Sunday 5.11.

It is possible to sign up for the whole weekend, or just one of the days.

Saturday and Sunday workshops work both together consecutively or separately. There is no overlap: the ties that are used might be same, but the exercises on Saturday and Sunday are different. Sunday progresses from where Saturday left off.

Contents:

This is a workshop for those curious about exploring the 'seme' side of kinbaku without committing to the use of TK (hands crossed behind the back harness). Semenawa is a Japanese expression referring to tormenting ropes, and intentions of playing with psychological and physical pressure during a tying scene. In general terms it deals with the sadomasochistic aspect of tying.

The topic will be looked at from both theoretical and technical points of view;
by learning specific ties to play with, and through discussions concerning questions like safety, what we get out of playing with torment, and how to make intentional choices and adjustments with our partner. As always, this is a partnered practice, so the content is aimed towards both the one tied and the one tying.

Suspension lines are great tools to add pressure and control when engaging in this kind of rope play. Therefor as the workshop progresses we will begin to familiarise ourselves with how we can start to incorporate them into our scenes in ways that do not require much prior knowledge.

Basic techniques like loading single and double column ties will be taught, so that it can be applied in various creative ways for our semenawa scenes.

Tamanduas tengu will be the main upper body harness taught - basic and complex version.

Requirements:

  • Saturday: frictions, fluent rope handling skills

  • Sunday: good understanding of suspension lines

  • Both:

  • Pairs/couples need to know each other from before, and have tied together prior to attending the class together.

  • Riggers/tops need to be proficient in making single column ties with a knot that does not loosen when the rope is moved or pulled.

  • You should also have learned at least some type of harness in the past, and be able to tie it with tension solid enough that it stays well in place when your partner is moved (for example from sitting to laying down).
Please practice a lot before attending!

  • Doing rope in a workshop setting for a whole weekend can be challenging for many. It is therefor not recommended if you as a model/bottom very recently started exploring rope and BDSM.

If you need any advice in regard to anything mentioned above don't hesitate to contact Tamandua or the organizers at Helsinki Shibari.

Bring:

  • At least 5 jute ropes of standard length (around 8 meters) plus one that has been or can be cut into two smaller pieces.

  • The rope needs to be of a kind sold and treated for shibari specifically. Hardware or boating ropes are generally not loose or smooth enough.

  • 2 strips of cloth that may be used as gags.

  • Sling + 1 ring or 3 carabines

If you need to borrow a ring or a sling, let us know in the sign up form!
